Repurposing Brooke Elementary School

""

Overview

The former Brooke Elementary School, located at 3100 E. 4th Street in East Austin, is a 52,282-square-foot facility constructed in 1954 on a 5.38-acre site. The school closed at the end of the 2019–2020 school year and students were reassigned to Govalle Elementary (for students living north of the Colorado River) and Linder Elementary (for students south of the river). In April 2025, the Íøºì±¬ÁÏ Board of Trustees formally declared the site as surplus.

Following a competitive solicitation process, the District identified Trammell Crow Corporation/High Street Residential, as the selected proposer for the site.

The proposed project is a mixed-use development that would include a multi-family residential apartment community with ground-floor retail and open space for the surrounding community. The residential component is anticipated to include a mix of market-rate and affordable (income-restricted) housing. Specific details, including total units, bedroom counts, and rental rates, have not yet been finalized.

Current Status

The District is currently in active contract negotiations regarding the sale of the Brooke property with the selected party.

The Superintendent is expected to execute the sale agreement in Spring 2026. Closing of this sale is currently anticipated to be in August 2026.
